FAQs

Students should be in their class ready to learn at 8:15 AM.  After 8:15 AM, students enter through the main office and sign in.  Student dismissal begins at 3:15 PM.  All car riders must be picked up by 3:50 p.m.  Students remaining on campus after the 3:50 pickup time will be placed in a fee based program that must be supervised by a certified staff member. The parent will be given a warning and a written notification prior to enrollment.

Supervision begins at 7:45 AM  Students cannot be dropped off prior to 7:45 AM.  Students arriving at 7:45 should be dropped off in the front of the school’s second entrance near the gym.  Students must remain in their vehicle until a staff member is there to receive them.  Please do not leave students unattended in front of the school - this is for your child’s safety.

Students that arrive on campus prior to the official start time are supervised by staff beginning at 7:45 AM  If students choose to eat breakfast, they report to the cafeteria.  Once students have eaten breakfast, they report to their assigned location.  Beginning at 8 AM students report to home room.

The car rider pick-up line is in front of the school.  All car riders should walk to the end of the walkway in front of the school and wait for their car to pull forward.  Parents should follow the posted signs, instruct their child to report to the area immediately and get into vehicles as soon as possible. Students should not be asked by parents to report to another location for pick-up.  This process expedites dismissal for everyone. Students should not be dropped off or picked up in any other areas on campus to ensure safety at all times.

If a parent wishes to check out his/her child from school during the day because of a doctor/dentist appointment or other valid reason, the parent is requested to report to the reception area in order to properly sign the child out of school. Parents/legal guardians must present a valid state or federal issued ID - the individual must also be listed as the parent/legal guardian in our PowerSchool system.  Parents/legal guardians that desire to have another individual sign their student out in a non-emergency situation must ensure that a written release is provided to the school each time the individual will be picking up the student - the written release may accompany the individual or may be emailed.  Please note that school personnel may have to call to verify the release of the students.   At all times ALL persons signing students out for early dismissal must have a proper state or federal issued ID upon arrival.    Parents/Guardians may write a note to maintain on file giving permission for an individual to pick up their child - this note is void after the school year. Please note that 2:45 PM is the latest that a student may be signed out for early dismissal.

District policy JLCD states “the district will provide the authority for an eligible student to self-monitor and self-administer medication as prescribed by the student’s health provider unless there is sufficient evidence that the unsupervised self-monitoring or self-administration would seriously jeopardize the safety of the student or others.  The district will grant permission to self-monitor and self-administer medication based on appropriate written authorization, according to the district’s administrative rule from the parent/legal guardian and a written statement from the student’s health care practitioner who prescribed the medication verifying that the student has a medical condition and has been instructed and demonstrates competency in self-monitoring and/or self-administration of medications.”  All other medications must be given to the school nurse with appropriate documentation for administration.

Longleaf  Middle School follows the dress code/guidelines of Richland School District Two.  Our goal is to create an atmosphere where teaching and learning takes precedent; as such, clothing should not be a distraction to the learning environment.  Please see our Longleaf Middle School Student Handbook and our  Richland School District Two student handbook for more guidelines on dress code.  We ask that you help us to continue to create an atmosphere where teaching and learning remains at the forefront and continue to assist the administrative team when calls are made that your child may not be meeting the dress code.

The Technology Insurance Fee ($20 annually) covers any first reported incident of damage to a Chromebook device.  This includes damage or theft (with a police report).  Loss of your device is not covered by this insurance plan and will require full cost of replacement.  Any additional incidents are not covered and costs are based on the schedule labeled within the RUP agreement you signed through Annual Registration.

Student devices are expected to remain in their case at all times (even when in use). Students are reminded that the case is only for the Chromebook and should not be used for any other items.  Damaged cases will need to be replaced at a fee according to the district scale. 

Chromebooks should be brought to school each day with a full charge.  A full charge will last the entire school day.  Chargers should be left at home until devices are collected at the end of the school year.  If your child loses or damages their charger they will need to purchase a new one from the school.  Damaged chargers will need to be replaced at a fee according to the district scale. Chargers purchased elsewhere may not be used and will require device replacement if damages result from their use.

Students can renew their library books by going to the media center desk with their ID or they can renew them on-line by emailing Mrs. Kelley at gkelley@richland2.org.

All teachers at Longleaf will use Google Classroom to organize/share assignments, and due dates with parents and students.  Parent emails that were provided during annual registration will be used to provide parent access to Google Classroom Guardian Summaries.  Parents will receive an email asking them to accept Guardian Summaries.  Once accepted, parents are given a choice to receive summaries daily, weekly, or not at all for each class their child is enrolled in.

Parent Portal is an excellent way to stay informed about your student’s academic performance.  To access: Go to www.richland2.org- I'm a Richland Two Student or Parent.  Click on Parent Portal to enroll.  Click on “Create an Account.”  During the process, you will be asked for an Access ID.  The Access ID will be the student ID number (5 digits) that can be found on your child’s class schedule.  The Access Password will be your student’s 6 digit birth date without dashes or slashes. (Ex. May 16, 2005 would be 051605).

Longleaf Engineering & Arts Program- the school-wide STEAM magnet program at Longleaf Middle. LEAP brings an innovative curriculum to all students and makes learning meaningful, relevant, and challenging. Through enhanced labs in science classes, engineering labs, emerging technology, expanded arts options, collaborative projects across academic disciplines, and an engineering mindset for problem solving, students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to L.E.A.P to success!

The School of Zoological and Botanical Studies Magnet Program; school-within-a-school. Students must go through a rigorous selection process to gain admittance to this program. More information is available on the district website. The ZooBot magnet provides opportunities for students to explore the natural world, develop an appreciation and respect for living things and the environment, and make a difference for future generations. These opportunities include monthly off campus field studies and after school program, guest speakers, and curriculum focused on care and conservation of living things and the environment.

Students are issued an ID in August, free of charge. The cost for a replacement ID and lanyard is $6.00. Students may purchase a new ID in the Media Center. For obvious safety and relational reasons, students are expected to wear their identification cards daily and surrender them to staff members and other personnel upon request.
